These red beauties are part of the Corundum group which is better known as ruby. Ruby actually shares the same chemical composition as sapphire, but different solutions during their formation made them the red color we all know and love.

They were named “corinvindum” in 1725 by John Woodward derived from the Sanskrit, kuruvinda. The spelling was adjusted in 1794 to the current corundum.

Metaphysically, ruby is said to promote loving and nurturing. It has been associated, too, with creativity, loyalty, honor and compassion. It’s thought to be a protective stone for family, possessions, and home.
