Freshwater pearls are primarily a calcium carbonate material that also contain an elastic, tough organic protein called conchiolin that is the “glue” that holds the mineral together. It is roughly 10-14% of the total composition. Some of the weight of the pearl can be attributed to trace amounts of water trapped in the organic matrix.

This particular form of pearl is typically from “cultured” or “farmed” oysters or freshwater mussels. Almost all species of shelled mollusks are capable of producing pearls, but the quality can vary and only pearls from oysters are recognized as such. Cultured pearls use human intervention by way of a graft from a donor shell that causes a pearl sac to form.
