These abalone shells were collected and the mollusk was harvested. They then took these shells and polished both sides to show off the gorgeous iridescence of each shell. The term abalone is derived from the Rumsen word aulun, and anthropologists have found the remains of abalone shells in middens (ancient shell mounds) that date back at least 12,000 years.
