Fordite is also known as “Detroit Agate, Motor City Agate, Paint rock, or paint slag”. These terms of the polished pieces of finely layered paint amassed from automobile factories are from lapidarists that have found a use for these wonderful pieces of history.

Fordite has been around since the 1920s and were initially dark, muted swirling neutral patterns. It was formed from the buildup of layers of enamel paint slag on tracks and skids on which cars were painted with acrylic lacquer, which have been baked numerous times. Colorful, bright and metallic colors were not added until the 1950s. The amount of fordite that can be acquired is extremely limited. With the advent of electrostatic spray painting, overspray has been all but eradicated. In some cases, older pieces will contain lead.
